Muay Thai camp in Bangkok for complete beginners: what to expect

By N&P Muaythai Camp, Rama 2, Bangkok ·

Short answer: Yes, you can join a Muay Thai camp in Bangkok with no experience. At N&P Muaythai Camp in Rama 2, complete beginners train twice a day Monday–Saturday, sparring is optional, and you live on site in a private air-conditioned room with breakfast and dinner included. A week costs 7,000 THB and 30 days cost 25,000 THB. Most of our international guests stay about a month.

Can a complete beginner join a Muay Thai camp?

Yes. Many people who book a Muay Thai camp in Thailand have never thrown a kick before. A good camp does not expect you to be fit or skilled on day one. It expects you to turn up, listen and work at your own pace.

At N&P, beginners train in the same sessions as everyone else, and the trainer adjusts the work to your level. Sparring is optional. If you would rather not spar, tell your trainer and you will do pad work, drills and conditioning instead.

Trainers speak Thai and a little English. Muay Thai is taught mostly by showing, so this is rarely a problem, and our reception can help in English.

What a training day looks like

Camp life is simple: train, eat, rest, train again. Here is a normal day from Monday to Saturday (Bangkok time):

TimeWhat happens
06:00–09:00Morning training
After trainingBreakfast at camp
MiddayRest, sleep, explore Bangkok (lunch is not included)
15:00–18:00Afternoon training
EveningDinner at camp

Sunday is a rest day. There is no training, but breakfast and dinner are still served. Training continues on the 15th and 16th of the month unless they fall on a Sunday.

What you will learn in your first weeks

Every trainer has their own order, but most beginners start with the same building blocks:

  • Stance, guard and footwork, so you can move without losing balance.
  • Punches: jab, cross, hooks and uppercuts.
  • Kicks and teeps: the roundhouse kick and the push kick (teep) that make Muay Thai different from boxing.
  • Knees and elbows, first in the air, then on pads and bags.
  • Pad work with a trainer, which is where most of your progress happens.
  • Conditioning: fitness work that builds the stamina to train twice a day.

Do not worry if the first few days feel clumsy and tiring. That is normal. By the second or third week most beginners can put together simple combinations on the pads.

How long should a beginner stay?

The minimum stay is one week. A week is enough to try camp life and learn the basics, but your body spends much of it adjusting to the heat and to training twice a day.

Most of our international guests stay about one month. A month gives you time to get through the sore first week, learn the techniques properly and notice a real change in your fitness and confidence. If you are unsure, start with a week and ask staff about extending while you are here.

The room and the food

You live at the camp, so there is no commute between training and rest. Your package includes:

  • A private room with air conditioning and Wi-Fi.
  • Breakfast and dinner every day, including Sundays.

What to bring

  • Training clothes for two sessions a day: shorts and quick-drying shirts. Clothes rarely dry fully between sessions in the humidity, so bring more than you think.
  • Gloves and hand wraps are free to borrow at the gym, and you can also buy them there. Bring your own if you prefer.
  • Flip-flops, a towel, sunscreen and a refillable water bottle (drinking water is sold at the gym).
  • Any medicine you need, plus plasters and tape for blisters on your feet in the first week.

Tips for your first week

  • Pace yourself. Training twice a day in the heat is a big change. It is fine to go lighter in the first few sessions.
  • Drink more water than feels necessary, and add electrolytes on hot days.
  • Sleep in the middle of the day. The midday break is there for recovery.
  • Tell your trainer that you are a beginner, what your goals are and about any old injuries.
  • Use Sunday to rest, not to walk around Bangkok all day.
